CIPMM 2010 National Workshop
CIPMM is the Canadian Institute for Procurement and Material Management. This was the National Workshop held in Montreal, and attended by more than 300 Asset Management Professionals from across Canada. The opening presentation was by Tom Ring, ADM, and addressed future plans for improvement to the procurement process.
SageData presented on PAS55 to a packed house - standing room only. Slides will be posted shortly. In the meantime, here are promised links to the Institute of Asset Management (The IAM) and PAS 55, the new Standard for Asset Management Professionals.

PAS 55 - Coming Soon to an Asset Management Project near you!
PAS 55 is a new methodology for the management of physical assets. It sets processes and procedures for the full life cycle from procurement through deployment, maintenance replacement and disposal. The process is well established in Europe and Australasia, but relatively new to North America. If you are responsible for physical assets, and your organisation is dependent on those assets for its operations, the PAS 55 has tools that will help you. SageData will be presenting on the subject at the upcoming CIPMM Conference in Montreal. Contact SageData for more information.

CNAM 2010 - Ottawa
The Canadian Network of Asset Managers (CNAM)) hold their 2010 conference in Ottawa. SageData will be there demonstrating our latest field data collection systems. This "Zero-IT" approach enables fast and effective data collection and reporting. Data can be hosted on SageData servers or your own. Data collected in remote locations can be processed and available to authorised users back at head office in minutes. Valuable for construction projects for tracking both material and equipment - See SageData at the conference. Presentations will address infrastructure projects including water, sewage and transport. It will include systems for inspecting and maintaining local infrastructure such as road signs, crash barriers and fire hydrants. Items can be identified with barcodes or RFID, and the latest RFID readers will be available for demonstration. Representatives will be attending from major cities across Canada. This conference is hosted by the City of Ottawa.

Web-based Asset Management
SageData release the latest version of BassetPro, featuring full web functionality. BassetPro has been developed over the last eighteen years, and runs in client server or web environments. The latest upgrade provides improved reporting. This version was configured for a client with many locations across Canada. Data Collection was done using mobile devices, with the data collected transferred via the internet to SageData's Servers. Authorised users then accessed the data to produce a wide variety of reports, including an Executive Summary that provides key performance indicators for the asset base.
This means that BassetPro is now available to anyone with an internet connection, anywhere in the world.

Active RFID for Asset Management
It is now possible to continuously monitor the location of fixed assets and track their location within the familiar BassetPro environment. This add-on function uses Active RFID tags and fixed readers to track the location of critical assets.
Set up is simple. Assets are first set up within BassetPro, and RFID tag is then affixed to the asset. That tag bears a unique identifier that is linked to the barcoded identification tag on the asset. The tag "beacons" every few seconds, sending out a short transmission which includes a unique identifier. Fixed readers connected to the existing network pick up the signals, which are then processed by a complex algorithm, using statistical techniques to analyse signals from multiple receivers to determine the physical location of the asset. This system provides instant response to enquiries, as the data is stored in the BassetPro data repository. All the conventional BassetPro tools are available, so the system can be used for routine maintenance activities, including calibration. The system can also provide warnings for unauthorised removal or movement of equipment.

Delivery Tracking System
SageData completes testing of the latest version of BassetPro, configured for Wide-Area use. Typical applications included delivery tracking. This particular configuration uses GPS to confirm location, and enables signatures to be captured and immediately transmitted with full delivery information back to the server, where they can be accessed by authorised personnel.

SageData goes to the Food Bank
The Food Bank presents some special challenges. Supplies need to be tracked accurately, including donated products that must be sorted and packaged for delivery. Because there is a high proportion of volunteer staff, systems must be easy to use with minimal training. SageData modified the standard BassetPro system to meet the specific needs of the Food Bank. We are happy to help.

High Voltage Application
Hydro One are constructing a new power transmission line, and working with Stantec as consultants for the planning of the construction. They face the challenge of tracking delivery of materials to numerous remote locations, and ensuring that the right items are in the right place to start construction. Stantec contracted SageData, who provided a variant of their Asset Tracking System to quickly and accurately track the receipt and subsequent movement of materials. Special consideration was give to training requirements, and the user interface was designed for use with the very minimum of training. All data collected in the field can be immediately available to managers at head office. SageData worked with several vendors to agree on marking requirements, and specific labeling protocols that simplified the data collection in the field. The system has protection built in against data collection errors. The system is operating as planned.

Quality Assurance for Manufacturing
A SageData client with manufacturing operations in Ottawa wanted to improve control over the inspection processes. SageData have a great deal of experience in this sector, and were able to provide a system that combines barcode technology with touch sensitive screens. The system is capable of handling a large throughput of items, each of which must be inspected, and an inspection record maintained. This is an upgrade to a system that SageData originally installed in 1994. The system increases throughput, reduces the possibility for error, and provides QA personnel with statistical data that enables the early detection of trends in Quality Assurance results.

Mailtrak does instant signatures.
Mailtrak, when used over a large geographic area, has previously passed back the details of date and time of delivery, but has retained signatures for transfer at physical docking at the end of the route. For this project we encountered a situation where transfer of signature was time critical. The transfer process was modified so that the signature was included with the wireless transfer enabling a pdf confirmation of delivery to be sent by email - including the signature of the recipient. For more information contact SageData.

List Audit upgrade for BassetPro
The BassetPro Asset Management System provides instruction and assistance to the user as data is being collected on new assets, or as the existing asset inventory is being validated. Now we go a step further, advising the auditors where to go (nicely), and reminding them of any missed items before they move on to the next location. This requirement was developed in conjunction with one of the larger Federal Government Departments, and has now been incorporated into the standard BassetPro product. For further information contact SageData.

Mailtrak upgrade - docking station now optional.
Until now, mail runners using the batch version of the Mailtrak system have been required to physically dock the handheld unit at the end of each run to transfer information for reporting. No longer. To meet the special needs of a recent client, Mailtrak has been upgraded to permit wireless synchronisation. In this case, the mail runners operated over a large campus, covering several square miles. Wireless coverage during the route was not feasible, but wireless technology was used to synchronize at the end of the route. This eased pressure when several runners were returning at the same time, and users reported that the synchronisation was easier, faster and more reliable. Contact SageData for more information.
