Counting Caribou

Sunday, July 22, 2001

SageData are involved in many strange activities. There is not too much that you can't put a bar code on. But counting Caribou must be one of the most unusual.

Approached by a research team studying migration patterns, SageData supplied hardware and assisted in programming a system for counting caribou. The hand held application is used in a helicopter flying a pre-designated pattern over the migration path. As various animals are seen, appropriate buttons on the hand held computer are pressed to record the sighting: male, female, juvenile.

The hand held computer is linked to a portable gps unit, so that location information is stored with each piece of data. At the conclusion of the study, data is exported in spreadsheet format for future processing. The entire system is light, robust and battery powered. For those that have to count caribou, or pretty much anything else, contact SageData for more information.
